Visualizing Greater Than Less Than

Overview

Using the greater than less than interactive Tool, students will interact to understand and use the concepts of “greater than” and “less than” to compare numbers.

This tool helps young learners understand and use the greater than (>), equal to (=), and less than (<) symbols when comparing quantities. It provides a simple, visual way for students to grasp the concept of comparing quantities

Students will:

  • be able to interact to understand and use the concepts of “greater than” and “less than” to compare numbers.

Vocabulary Words:

  1. Greater Than: Greater than (>) is a symbol used to compare two numbers when the first number is larger.

  2. Less Than: Less than (<)is a symbol used to compare two numbers when the first number is smaller.

To prepare for this lesson:

  • Please read through the steps before you start. You may want to choose some or all of the activities.. This lesson can be differentiated when working in small groups.

  • Explore this Greater Than Less Than Visualizer Tool Comparison Teaching Tool

  • Decide how you want to run the lesson. This can be done in small groups or the whole class.  Students will need a device to interact with the website.

  • Decide how to share the website with students ( Google Classroom, LMS, etc)

  • These are number cards that can be used as manipulatives. They will need to be cut out.

See Accommodations Page and Charts on the 21things4student website in the Teacher Resources.

Directions for this activity:

  1. Please read through the steps before you start. You may want to choose some or all of the activities. This lesson can be differentiated when working in small groups.

  2. Begin with a discussion about comparing numbers. Ask students, “Do you  know what it means for one number to be bigger or smaller than another?”

  3. Introduce the symbols for greater than (>) and less than (<). Show examples using a number card.

  4. Provide Guided Practice for about 15 minutes.

  5. Introduce the Greater Than Less Than Visualizer Tool

  6. Use the comparison tool on the website.

  7. Demonstrate how to input two numbers and compare them using the tool.

  8. Give a few examples for students to try:

    Examples could be:

    6 is greater than 2

    4 is greater than 1

  9. Show how the tool indicates which number is greater or less.

  10. Interactive Activity (20 minutes):

    • Divide students into pairs and provide each pair with a tablet or computer.
    • Have students use the comparison tool to compare different sets of numbers. Encourage them to say the comparisons out loud, e.g., “5 is greater than 3” or “2 is less than 4.”
    • Walk around the room to assist and ensure students are using the tool correctly.

Different options for assessing the students:

  • Observe students during the activities to ensure they understand the concepts.
  • Check for understanding
  • Use this Canva worksheet
  • Collect the number card comparisons to check for accuracy

MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students): Michigan adopted a state-wide version of the "ISTE Standards for Students" and named them MITECS (Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students) in 2018.

To learn more about MITECS, visit the State of Michigan's TechPlan.org website for definitions and support documents to assist you in the classroom.

Empowered Learner
1.1a Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
1.3.d Explore Real-World Issues: Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories, and pursuing answers and solutions.

Creative Communicator
1.6 Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media appropriate to their goals.
